One August day we left our home, jobs and school with a plan to drive Wesley, our 1985 VW Westfalia, from Virginia to South America.

JOURNEY

8 countries, 12 months, 15,000 miles.

BLOG

Ride shotgun with us, a Northern Virginia family as we drive our Volkswagen camper van to Mexico and Central America, to find answers to the questions that keep us awake at night: Is Mexico as lawless as the media portrays? Do teenagers ever smile? Will a 1985 VW Vanagon make it from Virginia to Panama and back?

ABOUT US

We were a typical American family of four with a full schedule of work, school, sports who packed it all up and into a 30-year old, 90 square foot hippy van, to hit the roads of Mexico and Central America for a year.

Ditching life in suburbia to hit the road with kids isn't for the faint-hearted, at least not if you want to survive with your sanity and family harmony intact or if you plan to resume your life back home at the end of the trip.  To help, here are guides to where we went, how we crossed borders with our vehicle, what stuff we used, what homeschooling looked liked, and how we spent our money.
